Keep the connected tractor clear across trailer changes
Use a sample day in which the same driver and tractor take more than one trailer. Identify the tractor’s actual device connection and the shipment or trailer information required for each assignment. A new trailer does not create a fresh driver history.
Include coupling-related work, inspections, travel and the handoff at each destination. Trailer condition, ownership and interchange acceptance remain separate operating records.
Power-only transport evaluation worksheet
| Assignment point | Question for the review |
|---|---|
| Next trailer | Are trailer and shipment identifiers kept distinct from the tractor? |
| Road departure | Correct driver, tractor and ELD connection? |
| Actual tractor change | New physical vehicle selected and configuration checked? |
| End of assignment | Earlier records and remaining driver work reviewed? |
Bring the actual truck configuration
The PT30 manual documents vehicle selection and record review. Ask to see those tasks for the proposed version, then test a genuine tractor change separately from a trailer swap.
Confirm engine, connector and mobile-device fit individually. Do not assume that the ELD provides detached-trailer tracking or certifies interchange condition.
For the broader fleet discussion, see dry van. Use the ELD rollout checklist to assign training and review responsibilities, and check ELD applicability for the actual operation.
Power-only transport questions
Does each trailer swap require a new driver account?
No. Preserve the proper driver identity and follow the correct assignment process.
Will the ELD verify the condition of a customer’s trailer?
That requires the relevant inspection and interchange records, separate from the driver log.
