Lost or Broken ELD Phone: A Recovery Plan

Factor ELD explains the questions to resolve when the phone or tablet used with an ELD is lost or broken. Protect access and required records first, then confirm the replacement device and the condition of the logging system.

Identify what stopped working

A missing phone is a hardware and access problem. It may also affect required ELD functions, but do not assume that every lost-device event has the same recordkeeping consequence. Tell the carrier which device is unavailable, whether the truck’s ELD remains connected to anything, and which records can still be retrieved.

Use the carrier’s security procedure to protect the lost device and account. Arrange any remote lock or session revocation through the authorized device administrator. Do not share another driver’s login as a workaround or erase an accessible record set before its preservation has been checked.

Follow a recovery worksheet

Recovery stageQuestion to close
Incident reportWhich phone, driver, vehicle and time are involved?
Access protectionWho manages the lost device and authorized account recovery?
Record inventoryWhat earlier and current records remain available?
Fallback decisionAre required recording or presentation functions affected, and which procedure applies?
Spare acceptanceDoes the correct driver connect to the correct truck and retrieve the required records?

If an ELD malfunction has occurred, apply 395.34 and the carrier’s instructions, including applicable notice and manual-record duties. A replacement phone purchase does not by itself complete that response.

Test the spare before relying on it

Confirm current app and operating-system support, required permissions and the vehicle connection. Check the selected driver and truck together. Then verify earlier-record access, any open event questions and the installed inspection workflow.

This checklist does not promise that Factor ELD stores every event in the cloud or restores a device instantly. Ask the team to demonstrate the recovery method for the exact proposed configuration. Recovery questions

Should the driver create a new account on the spare?

Use the carrier’s authorized recovery process for the correct driver identity. Creating an unrelated account can hide the earlier history instead of restoring access to it.

Can the next trip start as soon as the app opens?

A login is only one check. Establish the correct vehicle connection, required record access and the resolution of any malfunction or recording gap.
