Five checks before the truck leaves
- Match the device. Search the current FMCSA list for the exact product, model, software version and ELD identifier. Listing is manufacturer self-certification; FMCSA does not endorse devices.
- Match the person and truck. The driver signs in with their own account and checks the selected vehicle and VIN. A USDOT number identifies a carrier; it is not a driver’s login.
- Review the logs. Resolve missing information and unidentified driving through the carrier’s review process. The driver reviews and certifies completed records; a dispatcher cannot certify on the driver’s behalf.
- Check the in-cab packet. Include the user manual, transfer instructions, malfunction instructions and enough blank graph-grid logs for at least eight days.
- Open inspection mode while parked. Make sure the driver can display the required records and find the registered transfer option. Do not send test files to an enforcement officer without instructions.
Record exceptions before dispatch
Before dispatch, record the truck and driver, the problem, when it was observed, the available records, who will handle it, and the next action. Follow the carrier’s malfunction procedure for any unresolved recording malfunction.
For fleet-wide retention, training and audit responsibilities, use the full fleet compliance checklist.
