Identify the driver’s duties at both facilities
Build a sample trip from arrival at the loading facility through delivery. Mark the driver’s responsibilities during access checks, loading, load preparation and receiving. The planned appointment does not establish the actual start or end of that work.
Use a delayed receiving slot as the change to test. Establish how the driver reports the changed timeline and how the office reviews the next assignment. Keep the material’s condition and load-securement approval separate from the driver log.
Steel hauling evaluation worksheet
| Trip stage | Information for the review |
|---|---|
| Loading access | Arrival and actual waiting responsibilities |
| Load preparation | Work performed before road departure |
| Receiving delay | Changes in driver activity and revised dispatch plan |
| Delivery complete | Remaining travel and other duties |
Bring the actual truck configuration
The Factor PT30 manual documents truck selection and log review. Ask for those tasks to be demonstrated on the proposed version with the correct physical vehicle identity.
Confirm road-truck engine, cable and mobile-device compatibility individually. An ELD connection does not inspect steel restraints, certify load distribution or establish delivered material condition.
For the broader fleet discussion, see flatbed. Use the ELD rollout checklist to assign training and review responsibilities, and check ELD applicability for the actual operation.
Steel hauling questions
Can the ELD replace a load-securement check?
No. Driver records and cargo securement are separate responsibilities.
Should a receiving delay be recorded as the originally planned delivery time?
Record what actually happened, including changes in driver work, through the carrier’s appropriate process.
