Keep weighing and duty records distinct
Use a sample pickup and delivery with the scale visits your operation actually requires. Identify road travel, waiting, driver assistance and receiving work. A scale ticket can provide context, but it is not a complete driver activity record.
Keep material classification, weights, ownership and receiving acceptance in their appropriate records. An ELD installation does not weigh scrap or validate a recycling transaction.

| Trip event | Question for the record review |
|---|---|
| Pickup | What driver work occurs before the truck leaves? |
| Scale visit | What waiting or other duties occur around weighing? |
| Receiving | Who handles the unloading and acceptance work? |
| Return | What road movement and remaining tasks follow? |
Bring the actual truck configuration
Use the PT30 vehicle-selection and log-review workflow to frame the demonstration. Confirm engine, connector and mobile-device fit for each materially different hauling truck.
Ask the driver and office to explain the same example day. Preserve unexplained gaps for review rather than treating a set of scale timestamps as automatically complete ELD records.
For the broader fleet discussion, see waste hauling. Use the ELD rollout checklist to assign training and review responsibilities, and check ELD applicability for the actual operation.
Scrap metal hauling questions
Can the ELD replace certified scale records?
No. Weighing and driver-record functions are separate.
Should scale waiting always be marked off duty?
Determine the driver’s actual duties and whether the applicable conditions for that status are met.
