ELD for Tow Truck Fleets

Factor ELD helps tow truck operators assess driver records for ordinary towing assignments. Bring the dispatch, loading and return sequence so equipment fit and any claimed emergency relief can be reviewed separately.

Classify the call before choosing the logging process

A dispatch marked urgent is not by itself a regulatory exception. Start by identifying the actual tow vehicle, the customer request and whether the assignment involves ordinary transport or qualifying emergency assistance. Record loading and unloading responsibilities as well as the road portion.

49 CFR 390.23(d) provides limited relief from section 395.3 for direct emergency assistance after a police officer requests tow trucks to move wrecked or disabled vehicles. It is bounded by the assistance period or 24 hours from the initial request, whichever is shorter. Review termination and rest requirements in the same rule; do not treat it as a blanket exemption from all recordkeeping.

Bring the actual truck configuration

Ask Factor ELD to confirm the tow vehicle’s engine, connector, supported device and phone combination. The PT30 manual supports a demonstration of vehicle selection and log review for that product version.

Use a routine completed tow as the acceptance example. Keep towing dispatch, winch operation, recovery safety and customer authorization in their separate systems; none is verified by an ELD log alone.

For the broader fleet discussion, see hotshot. Use the ELD rollout checklist to assign training and review responsibilities, and check ELD applicability for the actual operation.

Tow truck questions

Does every tow call qualify for emergency relief?

No. The federal police-requested emergency provision has specific conditions and limits.

Will an ELD connection monitor the winch or certify recovery work?

No such capability is promised here. Confirm equipment-monitoring needs separately from the driver-log setup.
