ELD for RV Transporters

Factor ELD helps RV transporters review ELD options for the vehicle and delivery method they actually use. Bring the tow vehicle, transported RV and assignment details so the logging decision distinguishes pickup delivery, motorhome driveaway and other hauling.

Identify what travels on its own wheels

Prepare a separate row for each operation: towing a recreation vehicle trailer, driving a motorhome being delivered, or carrying an RV as cargo on another vehicle. Identify the actual driver and the power unit rather than relying only on the shipment description.

49 CFR 395.8(a)(1)(ii)(A)(3) permits manual records rather than requiring an ELD in qualifying driveaway-towaway operations transporting a motorhome or recreation vehicle trailer. Review the operation’s classification and other applicable obligations; neither all RV work nor all pickup work has one automatic answer.

RV transport evaluation worksheet

Delivery methodWhat to establish
Pickup towing an RV trailerActual combination and whether the qualifying operation applies
Motorhome driven to deliveryDelivered vehicle, driver and permitted record method
RV carried on a truck or trailerSeparate carrier, power unit and applicability decision
Different return or next loadRecording requirements for that subsequent assignment

Bring the actual truck configuration

Where an ELD is required or voluntarily selected, ask Factor ELD to confirm the actual power unit’s engine, connector and supported phone or tablet. The transported RV is not automatically the vehicle to which the ELD connects.

Use the assigned-vehicle selection and log review described in the PT30 manual to plan a demonstration for the proposed product. Verify installation permission on a delivered motorhome and avoid assuming one configuration fits every tow vehicle.

For the broader fleet discussion, see hotshot. Use the ELD rollout checklist to assign training and review responsibilities, and check ELD applicability for the actual operation.

RV transport questions

Does towing an RV trailer automatically require an ELD?

No. Review whether the specific driveaway-towaway exception applies, along with other obligations.

Can one equipment recommendation cover a pickup and a delivered motorhome?

Only after checking each actual power unit and installation arrangement. Their engines and connectors may differ.
