Driving for More Than One Carrier: ELD Record Planning

Factor ELD explains how to plan record access when a driver works for more than one motor carrier. A new carrier account does not erase earlier work, so establish who holds each part of the record before the next assignment.

Factor ELD

Start with the driver’s whole day

The federal property-carrier limits in 49 CFR 395.3 apply regardless of how many motor carriers use a driver’s services. Treat a carrier change as an access and recordkeeping handoff, not a fresh allowance of driving hours.

Under 395.8(j), work for multiple carriers within a 24-hour period has specific record-submission requirements. The provision also addresses the signed statement a carrier obtains when using a driver for the first time or intermittently. Have the receiving carrier establish the required record set before assigning the trip.

Complete an access map

QuestionRecord a concrete answer
Where is earlier work recorded?Carrier, system, dates and the person who can provide the records
What can the driver produce? The record range and the tested way to display or carry it
Which account applies next? The named driver account, carrier and assigned vehicle
Who receives the completed record? The required recipients and the submission process
What remains unresolved?Missing period, owner and next action before dispatch

For example, a driver works for Carrier A in the morning and receives an afternoon assignment from Carrier B. Carrier B needs the preceding work considered in its decision. Merely seeing an empty screen in B’s account is not evidence that the driver has not worked.

Check access without sharing credentials

Use each carrier’s authorized process for records and named accounts. Do not give one carrier another organization’s administrator password. Agree what information needs to be transferred and how the driver retains access to the required earlier records.

This guide does not claim that Factor ELD combines unrelated carriers’ accounts or automatically imports another provider’s history. Ask for a demonstration of the exact proposed arrangement and retain a separate access plan for anything outside it. A Driver's Daily ELD Workflow. Owner-operators.

Multiple-carrier questions

Does starting a second account reset the driver’s hours?

No. Available hours depend on the driver’s actual work and applicable limits, not on whether a particular account looks empty.

Can two carriers assume their ELD systems exchange records?

No. Identify the systems, test the permitted access method and establish a complete-record procedure with the responsible carrier staff.

Discuss multi-carrier record access

Contact Factor ELD to discuss an ELD setup for drivers who work with more than one carrier. Bring the existing systems and record-access requirements so the team can identify what the proposed configuration supports.
